Board Maths Paper: Reading the Question Paper in the First 15 Minutes

The reading time is a planning tool. Most students use it to worry.

Updated 9 September 2026 · Great Home Tutors

The minutes given to read the paper before writing are worth several marks if used deliberately. The task is not to start solving mentally — it is to decide the order of attack, identify the questions that are certain, and notice the ones that need care. Students who use the time to panic about the hardest question begin the paper already behind.

What to do with the time

  • Skim the whole paper once, fast, marking each question with a symbol: certain, probably, difficult.
  • Decide the order. Start with certain questions to bank marks and build confidence, not with question one out of habit.
  • Spot the long questions and note roughly when you must be starting them.
  • Read the instructions, particularly on internal choice — students answer both alternatives more often than you would expect, wasting time for no extra credit.

Do not read every question carefully in the reading time. There is not enough of it, and careful reading of a question you will attempt in ninety minutes is wasted twice — once now, once when you re-read it then. Skim to classify, read properly when you arrive.

Order of attack, and why it matters

Answering in paper order is a habit, not a strategy. Papers are not ordered by difficulty, and a student who spends twenty minutes stuck on an early question they could not do arrives at the questions they could do with the clock against them and their confidence damaged.

Starting with the certain questions secures marks that are genuinely available and settles nerves before the harder work. The only rule is to number answers clearly so the examiner can follow the order.

The time discipline afterwards

Roughly one mark per available minute is the honest budget, and a question that has consumed twice its budget with no progress should be left and returned to. Students find this extremely difficult and it is the single most valuable exam habit in maths.

Leaving space to return to it, rather than abandoning the page, makes coming back practical.

How to practise it

In every timed past paper, with the reading time observed properly. A student who has done six full papers with a deliberate reading phase does it automatically in the exam; one who has only practised untimed has never rehearsed the skill at all.

Questions parents ask

Should they always start with question one?

No. Start with the questions you are certain of, wherever they sit, and number clearly.

Is it worth skipping a whole long question?

If it is a genuine unknown and other marks remain unclaimed, yes, temporarily. Return if time allows.

What about internal choice questions?

Decide during the reading time which alternative you will take, and attempt only that one. Attempting both wastes time and earns nothing extra.

Does this apply to other subjects too?

Yes, though it matters most where questions vary a lot in length — maths and physics especially.
