Chemistry Doubt Sessions: Making Them Worth the Hour
A doubt session where the student has no doubts prepared is an hour of the tutor talking.

Doubt-clearing is valuable when the student arrives with specific, written questions produced by having attempted work. It is close to worthless when the student arrives empty-handed, because the hour then becomes a general revision lecture — which is the least efficient thing a one-to-one tutor can possibly do.

Why empty-handed sessions fail
A tutor faced with a student who has no questions will teach something, because the hour has to be filled. What they teach will be chosen by them rather than by the student’s actual need, and it will be delivered as explanation rather than as correction — which is the mode that produces the least learning per hour.
The student then leaves having understood a lecture, which feels like progress and is not the same as being able to do anything new.
How to arrive with real doubts
- Keep a doubt page. A single running list in the back of the notebook, written the moment something does not make sense, with the question number.
- Attempt before asking. A doubt that arises after a genuine attempt is specific and useful. A doubt raised before attempting is usually "I do not know how to start", which is a different and less efficient conversation.
- Write the doubt as a question, not a topic. "Why does this step use concentrated acid and the previous one dilute" beats "haloalkanes".
- Bring the attempt, not just the question. The wrong working is more diagnostic than the doubt.
The best doubt is a wrong answer the student cannot explain. It contains the misconception in a form the tutor can see and address directly, which is far more valuable than a question asked before anything was tried.
What a tutor should do with a doubt
Not answer it immediately. Ask the student to explain their thinking first — a large share of doubts resolve themselves in the explaining, and the ones that do not reveal exactly where the reasoning breaks. A tutor who answers instantly is efficient with the hour and wasteful with the learning.
And after resolving it, set a similar question to be attempted alone. A doubt that is explained and never re-tested tends to recur.
When a doubt session is the wrong format
When the student has a structural gap rather than isolated confusions. Someone who never settled the mole concept does not have doubts about stoichiometry — they have a foundation problem, and a doubt session will keep patching symptoms. A tutor should recognise that and change the format rather than continue clearing doubts indefinitely.

My child says they have no doubts but scores badly.
That usually means they are not attempting enough independent work. Doubts are produced by trying, and no doubts often means no attempts.
Should every session be a doubt session?
No. Doubt-clearing suits a student who is broadly on track. A student with a gap needs teaching and supervised practice instead.
Is it worth booking a session just before a test?
Only if the student brings specific questions. Otherwise the hour becomes reassurance, which is pleasant and not useful.
How should doubts be recorded?
Written down when they occur, with the question reference. Doubts recalled at the start of a session are usually vaguer and fewer than the real ones.
