Three months is enough to change the result substantially. It is not enough to cover everything, and pretending otherwise is how it gets wasted.

With about ninety days left, the winning approach in chemistry is triage: identify which of the three strands is costing the most marks, fix that first, and accept that some low-weight material will not be covered. The instinct to start at chapter one and revise everything thinly is the plan most likely to leave the student mediocre across the whole paper.

Week one is diagnosis, not study
Before anything else, find out where the marks are actually going. Take the last two full papers the student has written and split the losses by strand — physical, organic, inorganic — and by cause: did not know, knew but could not execute, knew and lost presentation marks.
This takes an evening and it changes the whole plan. Most students discover the losses are concentrated far more narrowly than they assumed, which is good news.
The rough shape of the ninety days
Weeks 1 to 4 — fix the biggest leak
Usually one strand. If it is organic, that means mechanisms and conversions daily. If it is physical, numericals with full working. If it is inorganic, short daily retrieval, which is the only method that works on it.
Weeks 5 to 9 — past papers, timed
Whole papers in one sitting with a clock. Marked strictly, including presentation. This is where students discover they know the chemistry and cannot finish, which is a different problem with a different fix.
Weeks 10 to 13 — error log and the practical
Every mistake from the timed papers goes in one list, sorted by type. And the practical file and viva get real attention, because those marks are entirely within the student’s control and are routinely thrown away.
Do not leave the practical to the last week. Internal assessment marks are the most controllable in the whole subject, and a file assembled the night before reads exactly like one. Viva questions come from experiments done months earlier.
What to stop doing
- Reading solved examples. Feels productive, builds recognition rather than ability.
- Starting at chapter one. The syllabus is not ordered by importance or by the student’s weakness.
- Buying new material. At ninety days another book is a delay, not a resource.
- Untimed practice only. It hides the pacing problem completely.
The honest expectation
Ninety days of focused, well-aimed work moves a student a long way. It does not usually take somebody from the forties to the nineties, and setting a realistic target keeps the plan alive when a disappointing test arrives in week five — which is normal and is not a reason to abandon the approach.

Is it too late to start tuition now?
No, but the brief changes. A tutor at this stage should be triaging and drilling, not teaching the syllabus from the beginning.
How many sessions a week?
Two or three, with at least one spent on a timed paper marked strictly.
Which strand usually pays back fastest?
Whichever is costing the most marks — which is why the diagnosis week matters. For many students it is organic, because pattern-learning fails on unfamiliar conversions.
Should other subjects be dropped?
No. Apply the same triage to each rather than sacrificing one for another.
