Accountancy Format and Working Notes: the Marks Students Give Away
Accountancy is the subject where a right answer in the wrong shape does not score, and students find that out in March.

In accountancy the presentation is part of the answer. Prescribed formats, working notes shown separately, and figures traceable from the note to the account — these carry marks in their own right. A student who computes accurately in their head and writes only the final account is discarding a substantial and entirely recoverable portion of the paper.

Working notes are answers, not scratch work
Students treat working notes as rough calculation to be done at the side and discarded. The board treats them as part of the answer, awards marks for them, and expects them numbered and referenced from the account they feed.
Goodwill valuation, revaluation figures, interest on capital, the new ratio — each of these is a working note with its own credit. Showing only the resulting figure in the account earns the figure and forfeits the rest.
Number the working notes and reference them. Writing "Goodwill (WN 2)" in the account and having a clearly numbered WN 2 below makes the marking obvious and fast. An examiner who cannot trace a figure cannot award the mark for it.
Format is prescribed, not preferred
- Ledger accounts in the standard two-sided form, with particulars written properly rather than abbreviated privately.
- The balance sheet in the prescribed order of items — students who reorder it lose presentation marks.
- Dates and narration where the question calls for journal entries.
- Totals struck and double-ruled. Small, mechanical, and marked.
None of this requires understanding beyond what the student already has. It requires being told it matters, and being marked strictly on it in practice rather than discovering it in the exam.
The habit to build early
From Class 11, every practice question written in full exam format, including working notes, even when the question is short. Students who practise informally for two years cannot suddenly produce formal presentation under time pressure — the format has to be automatic before it is needed.
This is the single most common gap between students who understand accountancy and students who score in it.
What a tutor should be doing
Marking written work to the board scheme and pointing at the marks lost to presentation specifically, separately from marks lost to errors. Most students have never seen that distinction drawn and are surprised by how large the presentation column is.

Do working notes really carry separate marks?
Yes. They are treated as part of the answer, not as rough work.
Is neat handwriting part of it?
Legibility matters; artistry does not. What matters more is structure — ruled columns, clear headings, traceable figures.
Does ISC differ?
The principle is identical, with somewhat more written explanation expected. Practise to the board your child sits.
