Chemistry Practical File: What Actually Gets Marked
The most controllable marks in the subject, and the ones most reliably given away in the last week.

Practical marks are the portion of chemistry a student has the most control over and the portion they most often neglect. The file, the experiments performed, the viva and the observation record all carry credit, and none of them require the kind of ability the written paper does. They require the work being done through the term rather than assembled the night before.

What the file is actually judged on
- Completeness. Every prescribed experiment present, in order, dated. Missing entries are the simplest loss there is.
- Genuine observations. Readings that look copied usually are, and examiners recognise a file where every titration came out to exactly the same value.
- Correct format. Aim, apparatus, theory, procedure, observation table, calculation, result, precautions. The structure is expected and its absence is noticed.
- Calculations shown, not just results. Same principle as the written paper.
- Neatness and ruled tables, which cost nothing and are visibly assessed.
A file written in one night reads like a file written in one night. Uniform handwriting, uniform ink, no corrections and improbably tidy readings across twenty experiments. It is the most obvious thing in the world to a teacher who has seen hundreds of them.
Observations are the part to take seriously
Record what actually happened, including the reading that disagreed with the others. Real experimental work has variation, and a file that shows it, with a mean calculated honestly, reads as genuine and scores accordingly.
It also prepares the student for the viva, where being asked why one reading differed is a completely reasonable question that a student who copied cannot answer.
The habit that fixes it
Write the entry the same week the experiment is performed. That is the whole method. It takes twenty minutes while the details are remembered, it produces a file that reads as authentic because it is, and it removes an entire source of pressure from the weeks before the exam.
For a tutor, this means asking about the practical file monthly rather than in February. Most students will not raise it themselves.
Why it matters more than students think
These are marks that do not depend on solving anything under time pressure. For a student who finds the written paper difficult, the practical component is where a solid, controllable score is available — and it is disproportionately the students who need those marks who neglect the file.
Questions parents ask
How much is the practical worth?
A meaningful portion of the total, and it varies by board and year. Check the current scheme for your child’s session — but treat it as too large to leave to the last week whatever the exact figure.
Can the file be written from a friend’s?
It can be and it shows. It also leaves the student unable to answer viva questions about their own readings.
What if experiments were missed at school?
Speak to the school early. Missing entries are a straightforward loss and schools will usually allow the work to be made up if asked in time.
Should a home tutor help with the file?
With the theory, format, calculations and viva preparation, yes. The observations should be the student’s own.
