English is the subject families arrange tuition for last, usually after a result that did not match how well the child speaks. The reason is consistent: the paper does not test fluency, it tests written accuracy, format and reading comprehension under time. A student can be articulate and still lose marks in grammar, in the writing section’s format, and in comprehension answers that were understood but not answered as asked. All three are teachable, and they are the reason a Class 9 or 10 English score is often the easiest one to lift.

The four places marks are lost
Grammar treated as a memory subject. Tenses, voice, reported speech, determiners and editing tasks are not general knowledge questions; they are rule application under time. A student who has read the rules but not worked through error-correction and gap-fill sets will lose marks here regardless of how well they speak.
Writing that ignores format. A letter, a notice, an article and a descriptive paragraph are each marked partly on structure. Content that would deserve full marks in an essay loses them in a notice with no heading or an application in the wrong register. This is the fastest section to improve, because format is finite and learnable in a few sessions.
Comprehension answered from the head, not the passage. The unseen passage rewards students who locate and quote, and penalises those who summarise from memory or import their own opinion. Inference questions in particular have an answer that is on the page, and it needs to be pointed at.
Literature read but not written. Prose and poetry are examined through answers of a set length that make a point and support it from the text. Students who have understood a chapter perfectly still write loosely, run out of time, or answer three marks worth of material for a five-mark question.
The most useful diagnostic: ask your child to write one full answer, timed, and read it rather than asking whether they understood the chapter. Understanding is rarely the problem in English. Producing the written answer to specification, at speed, almost always is.
What a useful English session looks like
Mostly writing, and mostly the student’s. A session where the tutor talks about a chapter for an hour is comfortable and produces very little. What moves the score is written work attempted, marked against how the examiner actually awards marks, and rewritten — and that second rewrite is the part usually skipped.
Reading matters too, but not as an instruction to read more. Reading with a purpose — a passage a week worked through properly for inference and vocabulary in context — builds comprehension speed faster than volume does, and Class 9 and 10 students rarely have spare hours for volume.
Class 9 is the year to fix this
English marks are unusual in that the same skills are examined in Class 9 and Class 10, so anything genuinely fixed in Class 9 pays out twice. It is also the last year with slack in it. Families who wait until the Class 10 pre-boards typically find that English is competing with Science and Maths for the same weeks, and it loses that competition every time — which is precisely how a capable student ends up with English as their weakest board mark.
Home or online, and scheduling in Delhi
English suits one-to-one online particularly well from Class 9 upward, because the work is reading and writing that shares to a screen easily, and because it removes the travel that limits which evening slots a tutor can realistically offer across Delhi. The one requirement is that the student writes during the session and shows the work — a scan, a document camera, or simply holding the page up. In-person sessions remain the better fit where handwriting speed and legibility are themselves part of the problem, which for some students they are.
My child speaks English fluently. Why is the score low?
Because the paper tests written accuracy, format and comprehension technique, not conversation. These are different skills and fluency does not carry them.
Is English tuition worth it if Maths and Science need attention too?
Often yes, precisely because English usually needs fewer sessions to shift. One session a week for a term, with real written work, is a common arrangement.
