Physics Numericals: Showing Working the Examiner Can Award

A right answer with no working is worth less than a wrong answer with correct method. Students find this out too late.

Physics numericals are marked in pieces — the formula, the substitution, the manipulation, the answer with units. A student who computes mentally and writes only the result forfeits most of the available credit even when the result is correct, and gets nothing at all when a small arithmetic slip occurs. Writing the working out is not tidiness; it is where the marks are.

The four lines that should always appear

  • The formula, stated, before any numbers. This alone is a mark on many questions.
  • The substitution, with units carried through rather than added at the end.
  • The manipulation, at least one intermediate line, not jumped.
  • The answer with units and a sensible number of significant figures.

The insurance argument is the one students understand. If the arithmetic goes wrong at the last step, a student who wrote the four lines keeps most of the marks. A student who wrote only the final number keeps none. Working is not for the examiner’s benefit; it is protection.

Units are not a formality

Carrying units through the calculation catches errors that nothing else will — a mismatch shows up immediately as units that do not resolve to the expected quantity. Students who add the unit at the end as a label have given up a free self-check.

Unit conversion errors, particularly with prefixes, are among the most common numerical failures in Class 12 physics and they are almost always caught by carrying units.

Where students compress and should not

Under time pressure, working shrinks. The result is that the questions attempted last — usually the longer, higher-mark ones — are the ones written most thinly, which is exactly backwards. A student who is running short of time is better off writing the formula and substitution for a question and leaving it incomplete than attempting it entirely mentally.

That is a specific, teachable exam decision and it is worth rehearsing in timed practice.

The same applies to a question the student cannot finish because they are stuck rather than short of time. Writing the formula and stating what is being solved for still earns method credit, and it leaves a visible starting point to return to if time allows. An entirely blank space earns nothing and cannot be resumed quickly.

How to build the habit

Mark practice work strictly on the four lines, separately from marking it on correctness. Show the student a right answer scoring poorly — once — and the habit generally installs itself within a fortnight.

Questions parents ask

My child says writing everything wastes time.

It costs seconds and protects most of the question. In timed practice the students who write working usually finish comparably and score better.

Do units really carry marks?

Yes, and they also catch errors. Dropping them loses marks twice over.

How many significant figures?

Consistent with the data given. Excessive precision looks careless rather than accurate.

Does this apply to chemistry numericals too?

Identically. The same discipline serves both papers.
