Structures and Mechanisms: Drawing Them So They Score
An ambiguous structure is marked as a wrong structure, however clear it was in the student’s head.

Organic chemistry is marked from what is on the page. A bond drawn to the wrong carbon, a lone pair omitted where it matters, an arrow starting from the wrong place — each is a lost mark regardless of whether the student understood the chemistry. Drawing discipline is a teachable, fast-improving skill and it is rarely taught explicitly.

The rules that keep the marks
- Draw large. Cramped structures produce bonds that cannot be assigned to a specific carbon, and the examiner will not guess in your favour.
- Curly arrows start at electrons, not at atoms — from a bond or a lone pair. Starting an arrow at a carbon is one of the most common and most costly errors.
- Show the lone pairs that participate. Not all of them; the ones the mechanism uses.
- Charges written clearly and placed on the right atom. A misplaced formal charge invalidates the intermediate.
- Conditions above the arrow, reagents below or beside, every time.
An arrow drawn from an atom rather than from a bond or lone pair is marked wrong even when the mechanism is right. It is a small habit, it takes a week to fix, and it recurs on every mechanism question in the paper.
Intermediates are worth marks on their own
Students often draw the starting material and the product and treat the middle as working. In mechanism questions the intermediates are the answer — the carbocation, the carbanion, the transition species — and each carries credit.
Showing them also protects partial credit: a student who reaches a wrong product but drew a correct intermediate keeps something, while a student who wrote only the wrong product keeps nothing.
The practice that works
Draw mechanisms from memory, then compare against the book, marking your own attempt for the specific faults above rather than judging it overall. Counting errors by type — arrow origin, missing charge, ambiguous bond — shows a pattern within a week and the pattern is what to fix.
This is the same self-marking approach that works for biology diagrams, and organic chemistry rewards it just as reliably.
Why it is worth the effort
Because organic is a large share of the paper and mechanism questions are where the harder marks sit. A student who understands the chemistry and draws it carelessly is losing marks that require no new learning to recover — which makes this among the cheapest improvements available in the subject.

Do curly arrows really matter at board level?
Yes, where the question asks for a mechanism. And the habit protects the student in entrance exams where it matters more.

Whatever the board permits, but legibly and large. Corrections should not leave ambiguity about what the final answer is.
How long does this take to fix?
Days to weeks, which is why it is worth doing early. It is one of the fastest-improving things in chemistry.
